Elizabeth Wood was born in 1860 in New Zealand – the daughter of Alexander Wood, a watchmaker, and Elizabeth French.

She married Thomas Gibson Spiers, a clerk, on 9 November 1885 at her parents home in Constitution St, Dunedin.

They had five children and, when Eliza signed the suffrage petition, the family were living in Maitland St.

Eliza died at her home in Maitland St on 8 September 1911 and Thomas died in 1952.

They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
