Mrs Thorne was born 2July 1861 at Kaiapoi New Zealand, the youngest surviving daughter of James Baker and Sarah nee Court. She married Fred Thorne on 11 June 1890. They had four children William Henry born 1891, died 10 Sep 1963, Elsie Harriet born 1892, married Donald Ross in 1935 and died 5 Dec 1963, John Wesley born and died 1893, May Mildred Thorne 1901-1902.

Her father had died in 1885 and her mother continued to live in the family home at Otaki St, with Jane and Fred and their children. Fred was a farmer. He died at home on 22 March 1939 and Jane died 28 April 1942. Fred and Jane were both buried at Kaiapoi Cemetery, and later both their children William and Elsie in Grave No. 157 there.

Her mother Baker X Mrs (Sarah) 258 and sister M A Wilson (Mary Ann) 258 and Mary Ann’s daughter Sarah Jane (269) signed the petition.
