Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley:
Janet Amy Tidey was born on 10 November 1870 at Maitland St, Dunedin – the daughter of Arthur Tidey, a wheelwright and Rosanna Wood.
Janet attended the Girls High School in Dunedin and, in 1885, she was awarded with a prize for writing.
When she signed the suffrage petition Janet was living at home, working as a milliner. She married James Swannell Foster, a plumber, in 1901; they had five children.
James Foster died in 1937 when he collided with the open door of a stationary car while riding his bicycle.
Janet died on 27 January 1962 and she is buried with James in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
