Janet (Jessie) Lyall Townsend was born in 1870 in New Zealand, the daughter of James Andrew Townsend, a farmer, and Janet Lyall.
When Jessie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Hawksbury near Waikouaiti.
She died at her home on September 25th 1901. She is buried in the family grave in the St John’s Anglican Cemetery, Waikouaiti.
