Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Stukeley Jane/Jane Cambridge was born about 1834 in Liverpool, Lancashire – the daughter of Artemas Cambridge, an accountant, and Jane Gray.

She married Charles Townshend in Cheshire in 1873 and they had a daughter the following year.

Their daughter died in 1875 and shortly after they emigrated to New Zealand.

Their next daughter was born in March 1876 at Laburnum Cottage, Cargill St, Dunedin.

In 1877 Charles was appointed to the position of Town Clerk and Treasurer at Lawrence where their son was born in October 1877.

In the 1880s the family lived in Invercargill before moving back to Dunedin about 1890.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Caversham, Dunedin.

Charles died in the Otago Benevolent Institution in 1902 and Jane died on 9 November 1909, they are buried with their son in the Southern Cemetery.
