Mary Craig was born about 1843 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

She married James Joss, a seaman, on 8 December 1864 in Old Machar, Aberdeen.

They had three children before Mary emigrated to Otago with the children in 1876 on the Dunedin, James appears to have arrived before the family.

In 1877 James was accidently shot while disembarking from a boat - he is buried in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.

He died 'leaving a widow, three children of his own, and two adopted ones to mourn the loss of the breadwinner...Mrs Joss is stated to be a very weak, sickly woman, quite unable to do more than attend to her domestic duties.'

Mary re-married in 1879 to Henry Trillo, a labourer, - they had five children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leet St, Invercargill.

Mary died at her home on 14 January 1915 and Henry died in 1924, they are buried together in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
