Mary Maxwell was born on June 1st 1843 in Clackmannanshire, Scotland, the daughter of James Maxwell, an agricultural labourer, and Helen Taylor.
The family spent a few years in Ireland before they returned to Scotland then emigrated to Otago in 1858 on the Jura.
Mary married Archibald Valentine, a county engineer, on December 30th 1862 in the East Taieri Parish. They had 10 children, and lived in Waikouaiti where Archibald died in 1890.
Mary remained in Waikouaiti where she signed the suffrage petition.
She died on August 8th 1916. She is buried with Archibald in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
