Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Stalker was born about 1847 in Argyllshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald Stalker, a farmer, and Elizabeth McMillan.

She emigrated to Otago in the 1860s and she married Alexander Watson, a wheelwright, on 2 November 1869 at Knox Church, Dunedin.

They had seven children and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Mornington, Dunedin.

Alexander died in March 1915 and Elizabeth died later that year on 28 June – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.

Elizabeth’s obituary said she 'was well-known amongst the older residents of this district, by whom she was very highly esteemed.'
