Biographical information provided by Fiona Oliver for the He Tohu exhibition:

Matilda Mount Newman was born around 1827 in the south of England. She married James Weekes in Devon in 1857. In the same year they came to New Zealand aboard the Solent, which landed at Lyttelton. After spending five weeks in Canterbury the pair headed north to the Hawke’s Bay region, where they remained for 23 years. While there, Matilda had three daughters and a son (her daughter, also named Matilda, signed the Petition too). By the time of the Petition the family had moved to Palmerston North. Matilda died in 1911, aged 84.
