The Maclaurin Chapel at the University of Auckland was funded by businessman Sir William Goodfellow in memory of his third son, Fleet Air Arm pilot Lieutenant Richard Maclaurin Goodfellow, who was reported missing in action off Norway in 1944.

Canon M. Cameron, chairman of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Churches, formally dedicated the chapel on 22 May 1964. The reinforced concrete building included the chapel and vestry, a theological library, study rooms, a chaplain’s study and a kitchen. It was designed by the architectural firm Gummer, Ford, Hoadley, Budge and Gummer and erected by the Sargeant Construction Company.

Although the Maclaurin Chapel was dedicated to the memory of Richard Maclaurin Goodfellow, its name was chosen to honour his uncle, Richard Cockburn Maclaurin (1870-1920), a graduate of Auckland University College and a distinguished mathematician, who had served as President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1909 to 1920.
