Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Taurau Kūkupa and his older brother, Te Tirarau Kūkupa. signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 13 May 1840 at the Bay of Islands.

Taurau later became an assessor for the Native Land Court. In 1888 a significant land quarrel between Taurau Kūkupa and Eru Hiri led to some deaths in the Far North. When Taurau Kūkupa died on 18 December 1896 he was said to be over 91 years old.
