The Nevis Valley Cemetery was established on 5 July 1899, although the first burials may have been held in 1898. Located on the valley floor and inaccessible during winter, this isolated cemetery was the burial place for early settlers and miners. The last recorded burial was 1939, although one headstone indicates that there was a burial in 1976.
Trooper Charles Risk from the Otago Mouted Rifles was buried here in 1923 after serving in the First World War and contracting Tuberculosis during the Gallipoli Campaign. A bronze plaque located on his grave describes the circumstances of his death.
