Clock stopped after February 2011 earthquake

The face of the clock in the Victoria Clock Tower, also known as the Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower, stands frozen at the time of the 22 February 2011 earthquake, 12.51 p.m.

The clock tower was erected at the intersection of High, Lichfield and Manchester streets in 1897 to commemorate the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign. After sustaining considerable damage in the earthquake, the clock and its tower were restored in 2014. Plans to keep the clock face at 12.51 as a reminder of the earthquake were shelved as this would cut across its original purpose as a memorial to Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. The clock stopped again when a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the city on 14 February 2016, this time at 1.13 p.m.
