Hunter is a small settlement in South Canterbury, with a Second World War memorial opposite the local hall.

The Roll of Honour lists 23 men from the area, only one of whom did not return. Lance Corporal Eric John Sole was killed in action in Tunisia on 22 March, 1943.

A memorial stone underneath a nearby tree is dedicated to Sole.

The 1903 Cyclopedia of New Zealand says that a hall at Hunter was erected in 1902, we are not sure if this is the same hall though.
