After the First World War, members of the Puhoi Town Band presented a statue of St Joseph and the Child Jesus to the local Catholic church in memory of six men from the locality who had lost their lives in the Great War (John Turnwald, Frederick Schollum, M. Joseph Schischka, Andrew Meaney, Anton Lennon and Jospeh Meale). This was installed in the church, along with a marble commemorative tablet, on 20 July 1919. The church also displays individual memorial plaques to two of the men, here named as John Francis Turnwald and Martin J. Schischka (see: The Building of the Church of St Peter and Paul’s, Puhoi: 1880-2009, comp. Jenny Schollum, Puhoi, 2009, p. 15).
