The former gold-mining town of Waipori has long since disappeared under the waters of Lake Mahinerangi. However, the local war memorial, a handsome concrete obelisk erected in 1935, still stands on a knoll overlooking the cemetery and the lake. A relief-lettered bronze panel set into one face reads:

In memory of / Wilfred Victor Knight, 1st Bn A.I.F. / Born Waipori 6/4/1890 / First New Zealander reported killed / in action on Gallipoli in the Great War / 1914=1918.

The memorial was erected and paid for by Wilfred's brother Eric and his father William. Another panel pays tribute to the five other men from the district who gave their lives during the war.
