Hyde rail disaster, 1943

On 4 June a train derailed near Hyde, killing 21 passengers in what remains New Zealand’s second-worst rail accident. The driver, John Corcoran, who was alleged to have been drinking, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.  Read more.
