Maungatapu murders, 1866

On 13 June Philip Levy, Richard Burgess, Thomas Kelly and Joseph Thomas Sullivan robbed and murdered four men on the Nelson goldfields (another man had been killed the previous day). All were hanged – apart from Sullivan, whose sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after testifying against the others. Read more.
