23 May 1840Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet

Henry Williams and Octavius Hadfield, of the Anglican Church Missionary Society, arrived in Whanganui on the schooner Ariel, captained by George Thomas Clayton, on 23 May 1840. Here Williams and Hadfield witnessed 10 signatures.

Williams may have emphasised that the treaty would protect Māori land rights, as in 1839 he had secured land at Pūtiki-Wharenui pā (fortified village) near the mouth of the Whanganui River in a trust to thwart a New Zealand Company plan to obtain it.

Wiremu Eruera Te Tauri, the only signatory on this day who was not from Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi, wrote his own name on the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) copy. The other nine signatories drew detailed marks next to their names.
