Although he is listed as Daniel on the South African War embarkation roll and his SAW service record, on his First World War service record he is listed as 'Denis' Ryan. This name is also confirmed by his school records. Thanks to Christine Clement for researching this.

He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 8 May 1915.
