Private E[dward] LARDNER 7066
9th Contingent
Died 17 July 1944
Aged 67 years

Plot: Waikumete Cemetery, SOLDIERS BURIAL H Row 2, Plot 24

Interestingly enough, both the embarkation database on nzhistory.net.nz  and Cenotaph database at Auckland War Memorial Museum have his surname as LARNER.  Documentation In his military records online show correspondence from him signed as LARNER and his records completed as LARNER.

Auckland Star, Volume LXXV, Issue 169, 19 July 1944, Page 1
His death notice states:
LARDNER – On July 17 (suddenly) at 34 Parnell Road, Edward Phillip Lardner, Reg. No. 7066, Ninth Contingent, South African War; aged 67 years. R.I.P.  Funeral  from C Little and Sons Ltd., 209 Hobson Street, at 2pm tomorrow (Thursday) for Waikumete Soldiers’ Cemetery.

Death entry at historic BDM’s on Dept of Internal Affairs site states LARDNER, Edward Philip and registration 1944/22748.

A death entry for an Alfred Daniel Lewis [Louis] LARDNER[1] who died 17 March 1939 aged 55 states Alfred was the youngest son of the late Michael and Mary Anne LARDNER late of Hargreaves Street, Ponsonby.   Interestingly enough, this is the same street that Edward was to reside at after the war so is possibly a brother of Edward?   He also has a Cenotaph database record for service in WW1

A search of historical births under LARDNER [and with various spellings for Mary Ann] shows:

Catherine Hannah – registration 1871/17675; Parents - Michael and Mary Ann
William Michael – registration 1873/21302; Parents – Michael and Mary Ann
Edith Augustine - registration 1880/9089; Parents – Michael and Mary Anne
Alfred Daniel Louis[sic] - registration 1883/9991; Parents - Michael and Mary Annie
No children appear under the search for LARNER.  Edward’s birth does not appear on either spelling.
