Historian David Clarke tells us that 'in 1900, while serving in South Africa [John Thomas Taylor] played in a New Zealand rugby team against army teams from other countries which included Australia, England and Canada.

There were a series of games and at the end of which New Zealand were successful and were presented with the Zeerust Trophy, which is currently held at the National Rugby Museum, Palmerston North (the cup is on loan from the Auckland War Memorial Museum). His name is on the trophy.'
