Hortense Richard was born about 1845, probably in Switzerland.
She emigrated to New Zealand and married Moritz/Maurice Alexander Schlonbach, a labourer, in 1879.
They had five sons, the youngest who died in infancy.
When Hortense signed the suffrage petition the family had a farm in Pine Hill, Dunedin.
She died on 30 January 1904 and is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
Maurice re-married in 1906 and he died in 1926, his burial place is unknown.
