Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Annie Phillips was born about 1840 in England – the daughter of Henry Phillips.

She married 18 year old George Sidney Kent Williden, a slater, in Brighton on October 3rd 1864.

On their marriage certificate George’s name was given as Williden but his name was originally Kent – his mother’s maiden name appears to be Wilsdon.

On the 1871 census both George & Annie gave their ages as 21.

They had 4 children, who were all registered under the name Kent, before Annie emigrated to Otago with the children in 1875 on the Wild Deer.

George appears to have arrived earlier as they were listed as nominated immigrants.

The family settled in Dunedin where they had a further 5 children, these children were registered under the name Williden.

In 1881 six year old Bessie & thirteen year old Emily both died.

When Annie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in St Andrew Street.

George died in 1911 & Annie died on September 28th 1922, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
