Agnes McKay was born about 1828 in Berwickshire, Scotland.

She married shoemaker James Brown on 18 February 1848 in Earlston, Berwickshire and they had three children before they emigrated to Otago in 1861 on the Lady Egidia

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further four children, one who died in infancy.

When Agnes signed the suffrage petition the family were living in on the corner of Hanover and Leith St, Dunedin.

Agnes died soon after on 19 December 1892 and James died in 1902 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
