Agnes Cawthorn was born on 9 May 1870 in Campbelltown, Tasmania, Australia – the daughter of William Cawthorn, a soap maker, and Jane Shore. (See 345 Jane Cawthorne)

She came to New Zealand with her family in the mid 1870s and they settled in South Otago and Southland.

When Agnes signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Bluff.

She married William Henry Cook Johnston, a butcher, in 1900 and they had three children.

William died in 1942 and Agnes died on 18 November 1948, they are buried together in the Bluff Cemetery.
