Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Spiers Sparrow was born on 12 June 1863 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Sparrow, an engine driver, and Ann Dick.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Mairi Bhan, and they settled in Dunedin.

Agnes married Alfred Charles Cooper, a contractor, at her parent’s home in Dunedin on 16 February 1888.

They had five children and when Agnes signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Hope St, Dunedin.

In the 1900s the family moved to Christchurch where they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1938.

Alfred died in Christchurch in 1942 and Agnes died at her daughter’s home in Ashburton on 11 May 1947, they are buried together in the Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Christchurch.
