Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Brown Dow was born on 24 August 1846 in Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Dow, a handloom weaver, and Anne McNicoll.

In 1852 the family emigrated to Otago on the Agra – they settled at West Taieri and called their farm 'Dowfield'.

Agnes married John James Kennedy, a skin buyer, on 14 November 1877 at West Taieri.

They had six children and when Agnes signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Gore.

Agnes died at her home in Gore on 18 September 1923 and John died in 1927 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
