Agnes Tretheway was born in the mining town of Waikaia in Southland in 1870. Her father William, the town butcher, died when she was 6 years old and her mother Sophia carried on the family business for the next 30 years.

In 1891 Agnes married Frank Thomas Bookham Walker a watchmaker of Queenstown. The couple had 5 children and later lived in Orepuki, Hampden & Waimate where Agnes died in 1916. She is buried in the Waimate Cemetery beside her husband who died in 1924.
