Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Yates was born in 1874 in New Zealand – the daughter of William Holdsworth Yates, a cab proprietor and fruiterer, and Mary Scurr/Scurra (See 93 Mary Anderson).

Agnes’ father died in 1877 and her mother remarried the following year.

Agnes signed the suffrage petition while living with her mother and stepfather in Great King St, Dunedin.

She married Peter Duncan, a sawmiller, in 1901. They had five young children in 1911 and were living in Karamea when Peter got into difficulties while bathing, her later contracted pneumonia and died.

Agnes moved back to Dunedin with her children.

She died on 26 April 1960 at the age of 85 and is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery with several of her children.
