Alexia Elspeth Williamina Sandilands was born in 1862 in New Zealand, the daughter of Richard Sandilands, a builder, and Ann Bremner.

On 5 December 1883, Alexia married Robert Hamilton Scott, a warehouseman, at her parent’s home in Dunedin.

They had seven children. When Alexia signed the suffrage petition, the family was living in Duncan St, Dunedin.

Robert founded a drapery company in Dunedin. The family moved to Auckland about 1924, where Alexia died on 30 May 1929.

Robert died in 1941. Alexia and Robert are buried together in the Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland.
