Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
also signed as 109 Alice Burrows
Alice Dagmar Burrows was born in 1867 in Wandsworth, London – the daughter of Nathan Joseph Burrows, a gardener, and Mary Ann Booth. (See 103 M A Burrows)
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Tweed and they settled in Southland.
When Alice signed the suffrage petition she was living with her widowed mother in Jacobstown, Gore.
She married James Hellier, a farmer, in 1893 – they do not appear to have had any children.
In later life they sold the farm and retired to Gore.
James died in Gore in 1935 and Alice died on 30 October 1937 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
