Alice Gertrude Bartlett was born in 1856 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of George Bartlett and Ellen Mary Troubridge.
She married James Hain, a teacher, in 1884 in Victoria and shortly after they sailed for New Zealand.
They had five children, two who died in infancy, and when Alice signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Invercargill.
James died in Invercargill in 1936 and Alice died the following year on 8 June, they are buried in the family grave in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
