Alice Gwyn was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Gwyn, a farmer, and Elizabeth.
She grew up in Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula and she married James Grainger, a labourer, on 3 October 1890 at St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin.
They had eight children and when Alice signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Sandymount on the Peninsula.
They later moved to live in Broad Bay then to North East Valley, Dunedin where James died in 1948.
Alice died on 11 October 1953, she is buried with James in the West Taieri Cemetery.
