Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Alice Maude Mary Barnes (nee Trounce) was born around 1843 in the United Kingdom. She married a platelayer named Thomas Barnes, and in 1878 emigrated to Canterbury with him and their three sons, William, Thomas, and Richard, on the Hydaspes. A daughter, also named Alice Maud Mary, was born in 1884. She married Walter Thomas Moles on 11 December 1916, three weeks before her left for the Western Front to fight in the First World War. Richard John Barnes, the son of Alice and Thomas, also served during the First World War.

Alice died in 1928, aged 85.
