Alison/Alice Hunter Howden was born in 1855 in New Zealand – the daughter of David Howden and Alice Fortune Chalmers.
She married Alexander Murdoch, a farmer, on 5 August 1880 in Green Island, near Dunedin.
They had six children, two who died in infancy or childhood, and when Alice signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Ngapara in North Otago.
They later farmed at Riversdale and Waitahuna.
Alice died on 18 June 1931 at her son’s home in Dunedin and Alexander died in 1939, also in Dunedin.
They are buried with their two young daughters in the Duntroon Cemetery.
