Alice Matthews was born in England about 1857 and arrived in New Zealand about 1873.
She married Stewart Allison Scott, a carpenter, in March 1878. In September of the same year Stewart was declared bankrupt.
In May 1879, their daughter Rebecca died aged four months. They had another nine children after this.
When she signed the suffrage petition, Alice was living at Cutten St, South Dunedin. They later moved to Reid Rd, where Stewart died in 1915.
Alice moved to Ashburton where she died on 11 December 1933. Alice and Stewart are both buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
