Alice Mary Hanlon was born in 1866 in Dunedin – the daughter of Simon Hanlon, a gardener, and Letitia Cunningham.
She married watchmaker and jeweller Arthur John Wilkes in 1885 and they had three daughters.
In the late 1880’s, for an unknown reason, the family name changed to Shaw and when Alice signed the suffrage petition the family were living in MacLaggan Street
Alice died at their home Katahdin in High St, Dunedin on 19 November 1928 and Arthur died in 1939 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
