Amelia Trembath was born in 1846 to John and Jane Trembath, one of five children. They lived in Penzance, Cornwall. At the age of 20 she married John Dale, a miner. They came to Oamaru from Cornwall with their three daughters in 1883, and had two more children in New Zealand. John worked as a dyer’s labourer. After Amelia was widowed in 1928, she lived with her unmarried daughter Emily until she died in 1930 at the age of 83.
