Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Amelia Isabella Gibson was born in 1841 in North Shields, Northumberland, England – the daughter of John Gibson, a toll collector, and Isabella Findley.

She married Thomas Ainsley Iggo, a painter and decorator, on 26 May 1862 at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne.

They had seven children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Peter Denny.

They settled in Bluff where Thomas worked as a butcher and they had a further five children, this is also where Amelia signed the suffrage petition.

Thomas died in Invercargill in 1907 and Amelia died on 2 November 1918 at her daughter’s home in Invercargill, they are buried together in the Bluff Cemetery.
