Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Amelia Whiting was born in 1846 in Buckland, Berkshire, England – the daughter of James Whiting, an agricultural labourer, and Jane Simpson.

She had a son early in 1862 and, later that year, she married Jacob Low, also an agricultural labourer.

In 1875 the family emigrated to Otago on the Wild Deer and they settled in Dunedin where Jacob worked as a plasterer.

In 1883 their son Giles drowned while swimming at Ocean Beach, his body was never found. 'The parents of the young man who was drowned, presented Bibles' to the two young men who had attempted to save Giles, they were also presented with inscribed watches.

When Amelia signed the suffrage petition they were living in Caversham, Dunedin.

Jacob died in 1921 and Amelia died the following year on 9 July – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

Amelia left money in her will to 'my adopted son Henry Carter'.
