Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Amelia Jessie Peart was born in 1874 in Dunedin – the daughter of Joseph Emmerson Peart, a bootmaker, and Margaret Hamilton Muirhead. (See 120 Margaret Peart)

When Amelia signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Stuart Street.

Amelia married James Liggett, a farmer and widower with four children, on 20 September 1900 at her sister’s home in Edendale.

Amelia and James had a further two children and they lived in Wairio in Southland.

James died in 1937 and Amelia died on 5 January 1954 – they are both buried in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
