Biography contributed by Clare Cramond

Amelia Stacey, nee Chase was born to parents Edward and Mary Chase in 1869. Her father Edward was a labourer in Wairoa. When she was around 19 years old, Amelia married Arthur Pakowai Stacey, a butcher from Frasertown who was just a year older.

Between 1888 and 1895, Amelia had six children, including her daughter Amelia Millicent Stacey who died aged six months. Her seventh child, Alma Amelia Stacey was born in 1897, the same year Amelia died aged just 27 years.

Amelia, her mother-in-law Elizabeth Stacey and her brother-in-law’s wife Maria Stacey signed Sheet 305 of the Petition in Frasertown. Amelia was registered on the Electoral Rolls in 1893 and 1896.

Tragically Amelia and Arthur’s youngest daughter died in 1911, aged 14 years. Arthur Pakowai later married Emily Jessie Torr in 1900.

Amelia was buried in the Frasertown Cemetery.
