Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:

Amelia Alice Stringer was born in Staines in about 1864, and emigrated to New Zealand from Manchester with her family some time before 1887. In that year, she married James Standring, a clergyman with the Baptist Church. They had five children: sons Hubert Eric, Donald Gordon, Victor Tainui, Herbert Huia and daughter Gladys May. Herbert died at the age of two. In 1893, the family were living on Nith Street in Invercargill but in later years lived in Ōamaru, Middlemarch and Alexandra. After James Standring’s death Amelia moved back to Ōamaru. She died in 1957, aged 92, and is buried with James in Anderson’s Bay Cemetery in Dunedin.
