Ann Spiers Hair was born about 1843 in Scotland, the daughter of James Hair, a bricklayer, and Margaret Spiers.

They arrived in Dunedin on the Philip Laing in 1848 – some of the first settlers in the city.

Ann married William Churchill, a seaman, in 1860 – they had 11 children, living at Maitland St from at least 1862 until 1911.

William died in 1921 and Ann died on 21 November 1927. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
