Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ann Eliza Adams was born about 1820 in London, England – the daughter of Thomas Adams.
She married George Jones, a bootmaker, in London in 1839 and, in 1841, they emigrated to New Zealand on the Arab.
A detailed story of their early life can be found here: https://www.bulliedfamily.com/documents/Bulleid%20News%2039.pdf
Their first two children were born in New Zealand before the family moved to Australia in the mid 1840s.
Their next six children were born in Victoria. The family settled in Geelong until 1862 when George was declared insolvent.
They then moved to Rockhampton in Queensland where their youngest daughter Margaretta died in 1863. The family sailed for New Zealand after this.
They lived in Christchurch, Timaru and finally Oamaru where Ann signed the suffrage petition at their home in Humber Street.
George died in 1897 and Ann died on 26 September 1907 – they are buried together in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
Ann’s obituary said she 'was widely known and respected and her demise at the age of 87 will be deplored by her children.'
