Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert

Anna Bailey was born in 1870 on Tryphena, Great Barrier Island to Irish couple Robert and Eliza Jane, who were farming on the Island. Anna lived most of her life on the family farm. Firstly with her parents, and after her father died in 1909, probably with her unmarried brother Robert William. She married in 1926 at age of 56 to Walter Ernest Haines.

Walter was the son of Francis and Martha Haines, born in Newbury Berkshire, about 1866 and immigrated in 1874 on board the Salisbury to Wellington. Walter had been married before. In 1891 he married Adelaide Smith, who died in Palmerston North in 1902 at 34. There were no children of the marriage. In 1904, Walter married in Nelson to widowed Lilly Emily Annie Dymes Oliver, nee Budge. They had three children: Myrtle 1905, Ernest Walter 1907 and Oliver Wilfred Henry in 1909. Theirs was a tempestuous marriage, with separation orders and claims of assault and desertion. Finally, in 1925 they separated, and Lilly was awarded custody and maintenance. Lilly continued to live in the Wellington and Petone area until her death in 1949.

Walter was many times reported in the newspapers for being drunk and disorderly, common assault and being of no fixed abode. He received several fines and short periods of incarceration.

No divorce has been found for Walter Ernest, but by 1925 he had moved to Auckland and in 1926 he married Anna Bailey. They settled in central Auckland and lived at Alford Street, Waterview, where Walter was listed as a pensioner.

Anna died in 1945 aged 71 and was buried in Waikumete Cemetery. Walter died in 1949 aged 83 and was buried in the same grave.

Anna is the daughter of #380 Eliza Jane BAILEY, Tryphena, Great Barrier Island
