Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ann Hay was born on 8 September 1844 in Orphir in the Orkney Islands – the daughter of Charles Hay, a farmer, and Margaret Isbister.

She emigrated to New Zealand, probably in the 1860s, and she married shepherd Isaac Howe on 10 February 1872 in Dunedin.

Their son Isaac Charles was born on 14 July of that year shortly before Isaac died in Dunedin on 4 August – he is buried in the Southern Cemetery.

Ann remarried on 21 July 1876 in Dunedin to David Whytock who ran a hotel at Puerua in South Otago.

On their return from Dunedin 'a large attendance of Mr and Mrs Whytock’s best friends met in the large ballroom of the Puerua Hotel, to welcome the pair. Dancing was kept up till an early hour next morning.'

Ann’s son Isaac died in 1878 and she and David had a further five children.

In 1892 they moved to Gore where Ann signed the suffrage petition.

Ann died at her home on 3 August 1926 and David died in 1928 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
