Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert
Anne Goode was born in London, England, the eldest of six children of Henry John Goode, hairdresser and his wife Anne nee Reeve. In 1861 she married Hermann Frederick August Dachenhausen in Marylebone, London.
Frederick was 27-year-old cabinetmaker born in Brunswick, Germany. His father was also called Frederick and a cabinetmaker. The couple lived in London and had two children:
- Lisette Ann (1862 London–1948 Auckland)
- Albert Henry (1864 London–1928 Auckland)
In 1870 Hermann was listed in the London Post Office Directory as cabinetmaker in buhl & marqueterie. The family immigrated to Auckland around 1884. They lived in Church Street, Ponsonby where Hermann carried on a business as a cabinetmaker alone, and then later with his son Albert.
At the Auckland Exhibition in 1897 Hermann was awarded a first prize and special first for his handcrafted furniture. His obituary recorded that, “The late Mr Dachenhausen was undoubtedly one of the finest Cabinetmakers New Zealand knew. His Timbers are unprocurable, and much has been seasoned for over 40 years.” Some pieces their furniture are in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
The family moved to Lillington Road, Remuera, where Anne died 5 April 1917, aged 79yrs, of senile decay. Hermann died three months later, in July 1917, aged 83yrs. They are both buried in the Purewa Cemetery, Auckland.
Anne’s will left all her real and personal estate and insurances monies to her spinster daughter Lisette, worth 600 pounds. Hermann left no will, but admons was granted to their two children. Both Albert and Lisette died, unmarried and childless. Albert in 1928 and Lisette in 1948.
