Anne Jane Gould was born in 1864 – the daughter of Alexander Gold/Gould and Mary Elizabeth Williams.

In 1892 she married John Cowie Herd, a shepherd. They had a daughter in 1894 and lived in North Otago for some time.

Anne died on 6 June 1944 and John died in 1945. They are buried in the Gould family grave in the Northern Cemetery. Her sister, Adamina Mary Gould, also signed the petition.
